Looking for an outside dog bed for your best friend?

What should I look for in an outdoor dog bed?

Most people buy dog beds for use indoors, but if your dog normally sleeps outdoors or if you have multiple dogs in outdoor kennels, you still will want to provide a comfortable sleeping bed for your dog. Outdoor dog beds are very different from indoor dog beds, most importantly being the materials. Outdoor dog beds are subject to wind, rain, humidity and rapid temperature changes. The construction and materials must withstand all of the elements without breaking and warping, and still be comfortable for you dog. An outdoor dog bed must be cool in the summer and warm in the winter, or the dog will sleep elsewhere. Be sure to avoid outdoor dog beds that contain stuffing or fabric that is not water-proof. The stuffing and fabric will hold moisture, making it cold in the winter and can breed bacteria and parasites. Be sure to take into consideration the weather conditions where you live and the location you would like to place the dog bed.

The best outdoor dog beds are constructed like hammocks or sling chairs. Think of good patio furniture; usually coated metal, plastic or wood frame stretching a durable nylon fabric. The frame provides a solid support to lift the dog off of the hard ground or cold concrete. The tough material provides a comfortable sleeping surface off of the ground but is waterproof and breathable. Just like your patio furniture, an outdoor dog bed should be easily cleaned with mild soap, hosed off and then dry quickly. Be sure to ask if you can purchase replacement fabric and if the frame can be repaired or replaced.

To ensure the longevity of your outdoor dog bed, and to make sure that your dog enjoys his bed, be sure to take careful consideration for the placement of the dog bed. Even though most outdoor dog beds are waterproof, you should still place the bed under an overhang or roof to protect the dog from rain and sun. Outdoor dog beds that provide circulation of air to keep your dog cool during the summer may not be warm enough during the winter. For places with cold climates, it may be better to buy your dog a dog house. That way he can stay warm and dry and the house will keep the cold wind and snow out. A waterproof, non-fabric dog mat can be bought to fit inside the dog house for extra comfort.

Expect to pay a little more for an outdoor dog bed than an indoor dog bed. However, you are paying for more rugged and durable materials and should have a bed that can last for years. Remember, an outdoor dog bed can be used inside the home, but an indoor dog bed should not be used outside.
