Looking for a certain size dog bed?

How big is a large dog bed?

Manufacturers are responsible for sizing their own dog beds and what may be a medium to one company could be a large to another. That is why it is so important to properly measure your own dog and purchase a bed based on his or her measurements, not the manufacturer’s sizing. Most large dog beds are designed for dog in the 50-100 pound range. This weight range includes breeds such as Siberian Huskies, Dalmatians, large terriers and most Golden Retrievers or Labradors. Most large dog beds will be 40-45 inches long for square or rectangle pillow beds. Many round or nesting beds run smaller and may be 35-40 inches in diameter.

Be sure to measure your dog from the tip of his nose to the base of his tail and add 6-12 inches depending on the type of bed you plan to buy. A bolster or nesting bed may have a much smaller flat sleeping surface than the measurements indicate. Several inches of the length or diameter of a bed may include pillow walls or the arms of a couch style bed. Be sure to ask if they have exact measurements for the sleeping surface not just the outside dimensions.

Large dogs tend to like to stretch out more than small dogs, which like to curl up for warmth. When in doubt always buy the larger bed. A dog will enjoy the room of a large bed and may avoid a bed that is too small and uncomfortable. Be sure to look for large beds that include high quality foam or poly-fill. Many large pillow beds made just from low grade poly-fill can flatten out or lump up. Foam or proper channeling of the poly-fill will help ensure that the bed maintains it’s shape over years of use.
