Dog beds main page

Your dog has been a loyal friend, now is the time for you to get him or her the right dog bed?

Are there dog beds designed for incontinent dogs?

Yes, there are several types of dog beds designed for incontinent dogs. Dogs that are incontinent from old age or other heath issues deserve to be comfortable and special beds have been designed to suite their needs. Incontinent dog beds are designed to be waterproof, wash and dry quickly and easily and should not absorb odors. The best incontinent dog beds are designed from waterproof and odor-proof materials such as plastic and nylon and include raised, sling-type beds. These types of incontinent dog beds often come with a bed pan so that if our dog has an accident, the urine drops into the pan and the dog is elevated above. This allows the dog to continue resting on the bed, great for dogs who often have accidents at night or while you are away from the home. The nylon sling will still need to be wiped down and all bedding should be washed after each accident.

Other incontinent dog beds are designed as mats covered with plastic or other waterproof fabric. These beds can be easily wiped down but do not move the urine away from the dog after an accident. The dog, mat and floor will still need to be wiped down and cleaned after each accident. Disposable puppy training pads may be helpful to place under the mat or incontinent dog bed to catch any excess urine and facilitate clean up.

Be careful when purchasing an incontinent dog bed that is made with foam or poly fill. Even if the bed is covered with a waterproof or plastic cover leaks may still occur. Once the foam or poly fill has absorbed some urine it may not be possible to clean or remove the odor and the bed may have to be replaced.

Even the best incontinent dog beds will need to be washed regularly and especially after each accident. Be sure to use soap and warm water and consider buying a cleaning solution that specializes in pet urine; it will help to remove the urine odor. Even if you cannot smell the urine, your dog can and he may refuse to use the bed.
