Not sure what dog bed
is right for your best friend?
What
are designer dog beds?
Designer dog beds can be divided into two
types; custom made dog beds made by small private manufacturers and
dog beds made by a large manufacturer bearing the label of a major
fashion designer. Designer dog beds are made from upscale fabrics
such as velvet, satin, silk, leather and suede. Designer dog beds
are made to appeal to fashion conscious buyers who want a decorative
bed that expresses how much they love and treasure their dog.
Because these beds are made from luxurious materials, they are often
hand made and expensive. The luxurious fabrics may not be machine
washable and so these beds are often designed for small, indoor dogs
and may not withstand the rambunctious antics of energetic dogs or
puppies.
Designer dog beds are often designed to look like either beds or
sofas or using a fabric or pattern than is emblematic of a
particular fashion designer. Be sure that you know which type of
designer dog bed you want before you begin shopping. If you want a
dog bed made in cooperation with a major designer, it may be best to
contact that design company first and inquire about their approved
manufacturers and retailers. Otherwise you risk unknowingly buying a
knock off. Also be ware that a major designer may have licensed
their name for use on a dog bed and may not be regulating the
quality. A large manufacturer of dog beds may be covering low
quality dog beds with trendy fabric and logos and selling them for
an astronomical price. You may be better served buying a good
quality, no name bed than paying a lot of money for a designer dog
bed in name only.
If you are only interested in purchasing a small scale designer dog
bed, be prepared for a lot of options. There are multitudes of small
boutiques and private companies that design and make their own
high-quality, fashion conscious dog beds. These beds may be less
expensive than a major designer’s dog bed and provide you with more
color and fabric options. The beds may include extra pillows,
designer scroll work or carving and designer touches such as tassels
and inlays. Again, the more detailed the bed is the more expensive
it may be. However many of these small boutique designers are
dedicated to making high-quality dog beds and the frames may be
quite durable, even if the luxury fabrics are not. Be sure to ask
the retailer or manufacturer of they will fix or replace any damage
to the frame and if they offer slip covers or fabric replacements.
Designer dog beds may be more beautiful than a standard dog but that
does not make them any more comfortable. Be sure that the
manufacturer uses good quality foam and poly fill on the bed,
especially on wood and iron beds. You want to make sure that the bed
provides proper support and is not too flat or mushy. A soft pillow
may look beautiful on an iron canopy bed, but if the dog is not
comfortable he will not sleep on the bed. Also be sure that any
fabric drapes, buttons or other decorative objects are securely
fastened and do not pose a threat to your dog. Small objects may be
easily chewed off and swallowed. Please remember that the comfort
and safety of your dog is more important than the style or design of
the bed.
